I-5 North Managed Lanes Widening PS&E

In North Los Angeles County, I-5 is utilized by a high volume of both commuter and commercial traffic. To manage increasing demand and maintain efficient travel, HOV and truck lanes are being implemented.

Facilitating both interregional and interstate travel, I-5 is a critical corridor in Southern California. Numerous commercial trucks use I-5 to transport goods between Los Angeles and other parts of the state. Furthermore, a rise in commuter traffic is anticipated due to a planned development in the Santa Clarita area. To address traffic increases and provide HOV lane connectivity, managed lanes are being developed on I-5 in North Los Angeles County.

Delivering the I-5 North Managed Lanes Widening project has required consideration of the high truck index on this corridor.

Advanced Civil Technologies supported the development of the PS&E for the I-5 North Managed Lanes Widening, which proposed to widen NB and SB I-5 to accommodate HOV lanes, auxiliary lanes, and truck lanes between the I-5/SR-14 interchange and Parker Road. The project will also upgrade the existing onsite drainage system where shoulder widths are impacted or where additional impervious surface is being proposed to complement the new design features. Our team was responsible for preparing the signing and striping PS&E.

During project development, our staff worked to accommodate the needs of both traffic and stakeholders along the corridor. Highway widening will be constructed within the existing right-of-way wherever possible. Additionally, proposed improvements have been staged to maintain existing traffic levels, partially due to the high truck index throughout the project area. Because the project is part of a larger system of improvements that Metro has planned for I-5, our team provided the PS&E on an expedited schedule.
