I-5 Widening Project PA/ED (SR-73 to El Toro Road) and Segment 2 PS&E (Oso Parkway to Alicia Parkway)

I-5 is a critical highway in Orange County and has seen a significant rise in daily traffic. This 6-mile freeway widening project will ease delays and improve conditions for years to come.

In Orange County, I-5 experiences significant congestion as nearly 360,000 motorists travel this interstate daily. Increases in traffic are anticipated and transportation planners expect traffic volumes to grow by 25% by 2045. To address current and future demand, I-5 is being widened between El Toro Road and SR-73.

Our team successfully developed construction staging plans to maintain all mainline lanes during construction.

Advanced Civil Technologies supported the PA/ED phase for the entire project corridor as well as the PS&E phase of Segment 2, the longest segment of the project. The improvements include the addition of a general purpose lane in each direction, new or reestablished auxiliary lanes, modifications to five interchanges, and ADA compliant upgrades for pedestrian facilities. Our team prepared the signing and striping plans, electrical plans, TMP, and construction staging concepts. Additional responsibilities included supporting the preparation of the Mitigated Negative Declaration/Finding of No Significant Impact and the Project Report.

Due to strict right-of-way constraints, our team explored creative geometric options to reduce impacts to adjacent businesses and residents wherever possible. Additionally, the final staging concepts have allowed for all existing I-5 mainline lanes to be maintained during construction while eliminating throwaway costs by ensuring that the structures are being built in their ultimate locations. To meet OCTA’s M2020 plan commitments, our team delivered the project on an expedited schedule.
