I-105 Express Lanes Package 1 PS&E (Imperial Highway/Sepulveda Boulevard to Central Avenue)

I-105 experiences high levels of traffic in both the mainline and HOV lanes. Converting the HOV lanes to a tolled express facility will improve mobility throughout the corridor.

In Los Angeles County, I-105 experiences high levels of traffic that exceed capacity in both the general-purpose and HOV lanes. The highway is utilized by up to 276,000 vehicles daily in each direction, resulting in severe bottlenecks throughout the corridor. To address degradation of the HOV lanes and improve overall corridor mobility, Metro is proposing to expand the HOV lanes into a tolled express facility.

The project proposes to construct a new median lane in each direction between Sepulveda Boulevard and Central Avenue, a distance of 9 miles. This median lane will be managed jointly with existing HOV lane as a tolled express facility. Other features include the addition of a weave lane at ingress/egress locations, additional auxiliary lanes, outside widening of eight overcrossings, and reconstruction of outside shoulders. Advanced Civil Technologies is leading the construction staging and traffic handling effort, including preparation of the TMP and construction area sign plans.

Our team is considering several challenges in the delivery of this project. The staging plans are being designed to reduce impacts to the nearby LAX International Airport and commercial districts as well as the Metro C Line rail service that occupies the highway median. Additionally, I-105 is a designated major east-west corridor on the National Highway Freight Network, and our team is staging construction to accommodate heavy truck traffic.
