Caltrans District 7 I-405 Treatment BMP Preliminary Design and Project Report (Contract No. 07A4127)
Highways such as I-10 and I-405 can introduce a high volume of pollutants to nearby waterways. Implementing Best Management Practices (BMPs) is critical to ensuring the integrity of our local rivers.
Pollutants deposited on a highway by vehicle traffic are easily washed into the surrounding environment and local waterways when rainfall occurs, and mitigation measures are critical to protect our state’s natural resources. To maintain the water quality of the Los Angeles River and the Dominguez Channel, Caltrans District 7 has initiated a project to implement mitigation measures for pollutants deposited on I-10 and I-405.
Advanced Civil Technologies supported the PA/ED and PS&E phases for the development of BMPs on the I-405 segment of the project, which will introduce 13 biofiltration swales to reduce pollutants in both project waterways. Our staff was responsible for preparing preliminary engineering studies, including the TMP, BMP concept plans, and cost estimates. Additionally, we prepared the signing and striping PS&E and sections in the SWDR and Drainage Concept Study.
Since the I-405 corridor has been widened and upgraded multiple times, our team needed to confirm the as-builts for the highway utilities were accurate, especially since some infrastructure had been abandoned and was not present in the current documentation. By performing field verifications and potholing, we determined the precise location of affected utilities and maintained the project schedule required in both phases.
